1952
Our Roots In The Korean Alcoholic Beverage Industry
The founder, the late Sang-myeon Bae, first established ‘Girin Brewery’ in 1952, and it was the beginning of KOOKSOONDANG’s distillation and brewing technology innovation. Through the foundation of the Korea Research Institute of Microbial Industry in 1970, we have been conducting research on Korean traditional alcoholic beverages and nuruk.
1982
Developed and patented for raw rice fermentation method
After conducting long research on ‘raw rice fermentation method’ for alcoholic beverage making that was used during the Goryeo Period, a new approach was discovered and developed in 1982, and a patent for the new raw rice fermentation method was acquired. In 1983, the ‘Baehan Industrial Company’ was established and with the foundation of the brewery in Suwon in 1986, the actual alcoholic beverage manufacturing business began in earnest.
1992
Launch Of The Good Alcoholic Beverage, Bekseju
In 1992, the name of Baehan Industrial Company was changed to ‘KOOKSOONDANG’. And BEKSEJU was launched in the market. Since its launch, BEKSEJU has been the first and best-selling alcoholic beverage in the traditional alcoholic beverage market.

Recognition And Compliments
On Our Effort
We received the Presidential Awards in the Korean Traditional Food Awards, Steel Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit, and ISO 9002 Certification. We are the first liquor venture company in Korea which became the KOSDAQ (Korea Securities Dealers Automated Quotations) registered business for the first time in the Korean traditional alcoholic beverage industry.
2004
Green Company

In 2004, the brewery was moved to Hoengseong in Gangwon Province located at 500m above sea level in order to produce alcoholic beverages in a clean environment. Owing to this effort, we were selected in 2007 as a Green Company (formerly Environment-friendly Company) by the Ministry of Environment.

Beginning Of The Korean Alcoholic
Beverage Restoration Project

In order to enhance the value of Korean traditional alcoholic beverages, we have been promoting the ‘Korean alcoholic beverage restoration project’ that restores and revives forgotten traditional alcoholic beverages since 2008.
2009
Change Your Mind About Makgeolli
With the introduction of fermentation control technology and refrigerated distribution in 2009, KOOKSOONDANG Draft Makgeolli was launched and it has become the new standard of freshness. Since the launch of flavored Makgeolli in 2016, we have introduced Makgeolli all over the world so that more consumers can experience the value of Makgeolli.
2016
Creation Of Cultural Value
BEKSEJU was selected as the first alcoholic beverage in the ‘K-Ribbon Selection’ in 2016. Moreover, a space for experiencing the history and culture of the Korean traditional alcoholic beverages, known as ‘Juhyangro,’ is being operated at the Hoengseong Brewery. Accordingly, the Hoengseong Brewery was selected as a ‘Visiting Brewery’ by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs in 2019.

The Korean Alcoholic Beverages That Are Widely Distributed In The World
As the No. 1 exporter of Korean traditional alcoholic beverages, which was awarded with the ‘7 Million Dollar Export Tower’ in 2021, we will spread the amazing experience and enjoyment of good alcoholic beverages in wider and more diverse places.
